One of the oldest love stories is people and music. It has been a story teller of history, life struggles, and current issues. An expression of our minds and hearts. It has told stories for centuries for a number of cultures. Music so happens to be one of my main points of happiness and I’m sure plenty of you would agree with me, I’m even sure music has saved your life as it has mine.
My love for it started at an early age (with the help of my mother, grandmother, and uncle) singing along with some of the most prevalent 90’s artists like Biggie, Pac, Mary J Blige, Nas, Hov, the lot of them. I guess you could say I fell in love with music through hip-hop because of the amount of power that was put into some of the most famous bars. As I grew older and entered my preteen and teen years I began to explore deeper and deeper into other genres; R&B, rock, reggae, metal, pop, etc.
As the years went on, when I experienced my highs and my lows, my failures and successes, music was always there. I think at the height of my depression I lost touch with it. I locked up and was determined that nothing could help, even the thing that had always been my passion. Even after losing touch I managed to find my way back and I think that was the point at which music saved my life..
I guess me losing touch with music is the reason I’m writing this. You have gotten however far you have in life with both the bad and the good, and believe it or not you’ve already found your coping mechanisms without even noticing it. That thing you can do to celebrate but also help bring yourself up, whether it’s dancing, singing, music, art, the gym, watching a good ass movie, or whatever it is you do, you have it in you already. I guess my point is don’t forget the things that make you YOU because those are the things that will save you.
To wrap this bad boy up, I’m just going to list a few of my favorite artists:
- J. Cole
- Kendrick Lamar
- Linkin Park
- Of Mice and Men
- Miss May I
- We Came as Romans
- John Legend
- Talib Kweli
- A Day to Remember
- Childish Gambino
Honestly I could keep on, but that list would take up your entire screen and I’m not trying to punish y’all like that! Drop some of your favorite artists in the comment section so we can talk. This was fun and honestly it helped me, so I’m going to end it here. Thanks for reading, till next time family, PEACE!
